Dragonfly Dome is an assembly sculpture based on the book “Dragonfly Insights” by Martha Reed PhD. It was designed so that you walk around the dome, read the signs and set your intentions before entering. The book is a visionary guide to self-awareness, inner peace and transformation.
Dragonfly’s represents transformation, they start as aquatic nymphs and as they grow transform themselves into beautiful flying insects. When a Dragonfly is balanced it can move in any direction desired, much like a person when they are centered, chakras are balanced and they can tap into their inner voice.
A Dragonfly also has compound eyes which can see behind and in front. It’s important that when on your spiritual journey to look at your past to learn from your experiences and apply the lessons learned to your future spiritual flight. It’s hard to change the world but easier to change yourself.
The lights represent the chakras in the body with the green in the middle (heart chakra) while the purple and blue are higher chakras. It's hard to see from the picture but it's designed so you can close the curtains and see the lights. The kids were big fans, they got it right away.
The book is a good introduction to a wide range of spiritual topics and it does a nice job of pulling them together with a common dragonfly theme. It states “you can spread your wings and fly knowing that you are perfectly in balance mentally, emotionally, brilliance for all to see.” If you had to change one thing about yourself what would it be?
This sculpture was exhibited at Chester County Art Association in West Chester PA. The show theme was read a book and make art. I collaborated with my daughter Lila who sewed the wings and help me set it up. The piece is an IKEA hack meaning you purchase things from IKEA and make art (outside fabric - curtains, center metal - chandelier, blue dragonfly lights - porch light) combined with other stuff (dome - PVC pipe, wood spiral - china vines).
